Ludwig Merckle is not known for his philanthropy, howere his father, Adolf Merckle, was remembered fondly in his local city, having purchased some local woodland to conserve, and to prevent unwanted developments, and having supported a leukaemia charity.

Ludwig Merckle’s brothers are both heavily involved in charity work, with Tobias Merckle having served abroad as a missionary, and his brother Philipp Merckle having set up the „World in Balance“ Charitable foundation.

Ludwig Merckle stated publically that he wished to maintain as much as possible of his father’s „achievements“. In addition to this, Merckle Group is suing Porsche, for their role in causing Adolf Merckle’s short bet against Volkswagen to fail in 2008. Merckle Group is seeking damages of €231 Million, alleging that Porsche wrongfully manipulated the share price of Volkswagen in 2008 by announcing their ownership of 75% of the company publicly. This caused a huge rise in VW share price which destroyed the short term gamble Adolf Merckle had bet against VW.

All this is not to say that Ludwig and Ursula Merckle do not give to charity at all, only that they do not make a fuss about it if and when they do. This is common among wealthy individuals, who are driven by a sense of honour and humbleness to donate to causes they care about, and are not concerned with fame or glory from such donations.
